Open Letter to My Son - image on

Happy Birthday Mojo! I can’t believe that you are five. It seems like just yesterday I was pumping all of that milk and rocking you to sleep. I’m sure you’ve heard it a million times but you were my most heartfelt prayer.

I have to admit that today is bittersweet. I wish that your dad was here. He would always say, “wait until he turns 5.” Like 5 was the magic number or something. It was at that age that he wanted to sign you up for flag football and take you on trips. I’m sad that you won’t ever get to experience that.

Ever since your birth, I have always felt the need to protect you. I know that all mommas have that instinct but this was different. It’s like I felt that we would have this strong bond. Maybe that’s why I still can’t get you to sleep in your own bed?

You see, your momma is a survivor. She’s been through so much. Losing your dad was something that I never expected in a million years. I never imagined that I would be a single mom. That was not the life we had planned for you. We wanted to give you the world. We wanted you to know that you could live out your wildest dreams knowing that you had two amazing parents behind you.

Your daddy is in heaven watching over you and your momma is by your side. Morris your smile and big brown eyes keep me going every day. I thank God for you. You are the reason that I continue to get up every morning. We cry together. You’ve even wiped away my tears. I promise that I will always protect you. I will fight for you. I want you to know that your life matters. You are my world.

My heart breaks for you. Not having your father in your life, tears me apart more than anything. Your dad was one of a kind. He lived his life to the fullest. The entire city can tell you that. I will never let you forget him. We have the flyest angel in heaven.

I love you son! 10-4
